Hannah Firmin MA. RCA.
I am a graduate of the Chelsea School of Art and the Royal College of Art.
I have worked as a freelance illustrator and printmaker doing work for a wide range of clients including many magazines, newspapers, publishers and advertising /design groups. I also work on commissions for private individuals and exhibit and sell my original prints and artworks.
I always use the relief print as my method of working, using either lino, vinyl or wood as the engraving/cutting material, often combining the print with paint and collage. I print my editions on an 1840 Columbian Press in my studio in Llangynidr, Wales. It is important to me that I continue to use traditional printing techniques and every stage of creating a piece of work is in my hands, from the initial drawings to the final print.
In 2004 I won Best Book Cover of the Year at the British Book Awards for my cover of Alexander McCall Smith’s book ‘The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency.’ I also illustrated the covers for the rest of this series, and other books by the author. My illustration work is often influenced by my interests in nature, plants and the countryside, and my love of the craft of the relief print.
I continue to exhibit my work widely as well as working for such clients as The Folio Society, The National Trust, the BBC and many others. I run printmaking and illustration workshops at various venues for small groups of adults and children.
